Impact of roll hardness quality
The hardness of rolls has been measured in the industry for a long time — and for good reason. The hardness profile is an excellent indicator of overall roll quality. Common faults such as bagginess, rope marks and loose edges are clearly visible in the profile. Hardness variations and out-of-roundness can impact especially bulky papers like newsprint and some book grades, as well as aluminium and plastic substrates. Tapio specialise in measurement instruments, analysis software, and consulting for the paper, packaging, tissue, plastic, printing, converting and non-woven industries. Their solutions help mills improve quality and optimise operations by linking measured quality variations to the production line elements responsible for them. In this session, they will discuss hardness metrics, ranking methods, and case studies covering machine rolls, calendering, and plastic film uniformity.

The Optimised Paper Handling & Logistics project is hosted by the World Printers Forum.
